Thumb Twist

If an opponent seizes the front of your uniform with his thumb out, as illustrated in figure 9-32 (A), reach up with your right hand and place your fingers over his thumb and your thumb under his, and twist his thumb towards him (figure 9-32 (B)). This will force him to the ground.

Thumb Twist Used When Uniform is Grasped With
Thumb Turned Inward

If he grasps your uniform with his thumb turned inward, as illustrated in figure 9-33 (A), grip the outside of the base of his thumb with your fingers, and place the inside of your thumb over his thumbnail (figure

9-33 (B)). Close your fist, forcing his thumb towards the palm of his hand; this will cause him excruciating pain and quiet him very successfully.

If an opponent grasps you around the waist, attempting a "bear hug" (figure 9-34 (A)), he can be forced to release his hold very easily. Close your fist and place

your thumb under the base of his nose. This is a sensitive spot, and pressure will either cause him to release his hold or bend his head backward (figure 9-34 (B)). In the latter event additional pressure may be applied by
