There is also a request in the appropriation for additional current expense funds so that several faculty members can be added to the staff. The addition of these instructors will make it possible to enrich the courses already given and to initiate new courses, which are required both from the viewpoint of accreditation and for the purpose of giving the student a well-rounded program.

These requests constitute a beginning step in satisfying the requirements of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for accreditation. This is the goal which must be achieved for the college.

ONLY COLLEGE FOR DEAF

Senator HILL. I believe this school is the only school of its kind for the deaf in all the world?

Dr. ELSTAD. The only college for the deaf, "yes."

Senator HILL. As you know, I have had the pleasure of visiting your institution. You have a wonderful institution there and are doing a wonderful work. If these funds are appropriated it will make it possible for your school to be accredited; is that right, Doctor? Dr. ELSTAD. That is what we hope, and have been promised. Senator HILL. You have not had any new construction out there since what time?

Dr. ELSTAD. 1917.

TOTAL STUDENT BODY

Senator HILL. 1917. What is your total student body today?
Dr. ELSTAD. 285.

Senator HILL. Where do they come from?

Dr. ELSTAD. 43 States.

Senator HILL. They come from 43 of the States?

Dr. ELSTAD. Yes, and from Canada.

Senator HILL. Young men and women are eligible to come there from every State in the Union; is that correct?

Dr. ELSTAD. That is correct.

Senator HILL. Senator Potter?

Senator POTTER. I understand that this is the only college for the deaf in the country?

Dr. ELSTAD. That is right.

Senator POTTER. You must receive some students from our school for the deaf in Flint, Mich.?

Dr. ELSTAD. Yes, I think we have 5 or 6.

Senator POTTER. Do you have a waiting list for people to enter the college?

ENROLLMENT LIMITED

Dr. ELSTAD. We had examinations given last Thursday and Friday to 185 students throughout the United States, and of those we can take about 60, I think. It is the only college. There should be an opportunity for all who qualify to come, and we feel that with this construction program it will be possible.

Senator POTTER. What have been your results, so far as placement after college training?

Dr. ELSTAD. Excellent. We never have any difficulty with placing the students.

Senator HILL. You feel that all of the 185 are qualified for the college work?

Dr. ELSTAD. No; I wouldn't say all. I would say about 125 of those. Senator HILL. And you will be able to take only how many?

Dr. ELSTAD. From 60 to 70 of those. Because there are deaf graduates from hearing high schools who must be accommodated also. They come to us without special examination, and that is increasing as they find out that there is a Gallaudet College. Many of them do not know that there is a college like this.

Senator HILL. Do you find that your applications have increased through the years?

Dr. ELSTAD. Very much.

Senator POTTER. And this new construction program will enable you to handle how many more students.

Dr. ELSTAD. We have 285 now.

It will enable us to take in from

500 to 700. That, we think, will satisfy the requests and requirements for all time, as we see it now.

Senator HILL. You say that it will satisfy the requirements, so far as you see them as of now?

Dr. ELSTAD. That is right.

Senator HILL. The House gave you what the budget recommended, which was pretty much what you had asked?

Dr. ELSTAD. That is right.

Senator HILL. Thank you, Doctor.
