The use of compressed air shall not cause
changes in the wine other than those oc-
curring during the usual storage in wooden
cooperage over a period of time. GRAS.
Copper added in the form of copper sulfate
shall not exceed 0.5 part per million of
copper with a residual level not in excess
of 0.2 part per million of copper. GRAS
No insoluble or soluble residue in excess of
one part per million shall remain in the fin-
ished wine, and the basic character of the
wine shall not be changed by such treat-
ment. GRAS.

Defoaming agents which are 100 percent

active may be used in amounts not exceeding 0.15 pound per 1,000 gallons of wine. Defoaming agents which are 30 percent active may be used in amounts not exceeding 0.5 pound per 1,000 gallons of wine. Silicon dioxide shall be completely removed by filtration. 21 CFR 121.1099, 121.101(d)(2), 121.101 (d)(8).

GRAS.

Propellant in aerosol containers of vermouth. Only a minute amount of the gas shall remain in the dispensed vermouth, 21 CFR 121.1065.

The natural or fixed acid in grape wine has not been reduced below 4 parts per thousand for red table wines, 3 parts per thousand for white wines, or 2.5 parts per thousand for all other grape wines; and the natural or fixed acid in wine, other than grape wine, has not been reduced below 4.0 parts per thousand.

§ 240.1052 Notice.

If the proprietor desires to use materials or methods not specifically authorized in § 240.1051 or elsewhere in this part, he must file notice, in triplicate, with the regional regulatory administrator. The notice will show the name and description of the material or method, the purpose, the manner and the extent to which it is to be used, together with any pertinent information in regard to the material or method. A sample of the material, if requested by the regional regulatory administrator, will be forwarded. There may be forwarded with the notice any data or written statements tending to show that the proposed use of the material or method is a cellar treatment consistent with good commercial practice. If the regional regulatory administrator has been advised by the Director that the use of the method or material is approved, he will so inform the proprietor and state limitations, if any, which must be observed. However, if the regional regulatory administrator has not been so advised, he will forward the notice, with pertinent data, to the Director for a decision regarding the use of the method or material. The proprietor should not use the proposed method or material until receipt of advice that the Director has found its use not to be contrary to the provisions of this part.
