ARNOLD & PORTER, Washington, D.C., November 30, 1971.

Re Senate Hearings Before Subcommittee on Environment on Toxic Substances.

Mr. MICHAEL B. BROWNLEE,

Old Senate Office Building,

Washington, D.C.

DEAR MIKE: This is further to my letter of November 8, 1971, referring to the effect of non-phosphate detergents on the flame retardancy characteristics of fabric.

1. I enclose three sets of photographs of the four test data boards which I believe will be appropriate for reproduction in the printed hearings.

2. I am advised that, as to the pilot plant-produced phosphate product, for standard control purposes Lever used a formula containing 50% sodium tripolyphosphate and 20% linear alkylate sulfonate. The balance was sodium sulfate, water and miscellaneous. This formula approximates the standard used by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, the difference being that they use 20% of a non-ionic surfactant instead of the LAS. The difference would not affect the tests. The same results are obtained with Tide itself.

Sincerely yours,

WILLIAM D. ROGERS.
