Lapeer State House and Training School, Michigan. The

"surplus special" takes the happy route at the Lapeer State

House and Training School in Michigan. What child

doesn't enjoy a train ride? These converted warehouse

tractors mean a lot of "heaven on earth" for the handi-

capped students. They also provide transportation needed

by some of the special patients at the school___

post office, the city planners snapped up the old one for

their new library faster than you can turn a page.

time was lost in the renovating-

Southern Illinois University. The Southern Illinois Uni-

versity Vocational Technical Institute received buildings

of every conceivable type when the property that was

originally the old Illinois Ordnance Plant was conveyed to

them. The administration offices for the vocational

technical institute and the school of welding are housed in

two of the many types of buildings that are in constant use.

Fifty percent of the equipment used in the school of weld-

ing came from surplus property.

University of California, Davis, Calif.-A beta ray spectrom-

eter used in studying radioactivity was constructed by the

physics department of the University of California at

Davis. It took 9 miles of edge wound copper ribbon to

bring its 8-foot-long coil, 30 inches in diameter, to the

necessary tolerances of performance. This is the only

instrument in existence which is absolute in accuracy in its

field of low energy research. Twenty-five percent of the

instrumentation and 50 percent of the raw materials used

in fabricating the spectrometer were obtained from surplus-
