The subcommittee met, pursuant to call, at 9:30 a.m., in the auditorium of the REA Building, Fort Morgan, Colo., Representative Harold T. Johnson (chairman of the subcommittee) presiding. Mr. JOHNSON. The Subcommittee on Irrigation and Reclamation will come to order. I will now yield to the chairman of the full committee, Mr. Aspinall of Colorado and this district. Mr. ASPINALL. I asked for this time so that I could present to those attending this hearing those Members of Congress who are present here so that you would have an idea as to who is working here today, if you do not already have. To my immediate right, the chairman of the Subcommittee on Irrigation and Reclamation from California's Second District, interested in all matters of natural resources, but particularly interested in irrigation, the Honorable Harold T., or Biz, Johnson. He will be the chairman today as he has been on all matters of this nature since he has become chairman on this committee. To my immediate left, another great conservationist who has been in Congress since his brother went to the Secretary of Interior position. This gentleman does not ride on his brother's coattails, I can tell you that; he is an effective servant in his own right. He is just one place below the subcommittee chairmen on the committee; that's an indication of his seniority. Morris K. Udall from Arizona. To his left, another relatively newcomer to the Congress of the United States and from that great southwestern portion of that great State of Texas. I told him the other night that Colorado was the only part that was really able to secede effectively from Texas. This gentleman is interested in natural resources development, also a very effective member of our committee, the Honorable Richard White of Texas. Then to the immediate right of the subcommittee chairman is a newcomer to Congress, finishing his first term. He has already made a very fine and effective record in the Congress and on our committee, repre (1) |
