Purpose:

Training grants for the field of child welfare are authorized under Section 426 of the Social Security Act. The purpose of this program is to fill the need for trained personnel to work in the field of child and family services and to train personnel currently employed in this field.

Explanation:

Under Section 426 training grants, including teaching grants, traineeship grants for student support, and short-term training grants are made to public and non-profit institutions of higher eduction. Grants are made to accredited educational institutions, including community colleges, undergraduate schools, and graduate and professional schools.

Accomplishments in 1976:

Training projects under Section 426 will give particular attention to areas of high national and State priority such as implementation of Title XX child and family service programs, improved management of these programs, child care services, and services to maintain children in their own homes and preserve family life for children as far as possible. An estimated 150 projects will be funded, including long-term and short-term projects.
