INTRODUCTION.

The cost of publishing a work of this nature, and the improbability of securing a compensatory return from the sale in the Colony, were animadverted upon in the preface to the last edition-the first instance of a work of the kind being published in the Island for the last 14 years. The compiler must, however, remark with some satisfaction that, although the sale did not realize for him any pecuniary profit, it still, owing to the encouragement shewn by the Commercial body, and the liberality of Government, did not entail upon him any pecuniary loss.

This edition, like the first, has been prepared with no other object than that of being of some real utility to the Mauritian public. If the renewed attempt is not accompanied by personal loss (which the compiler is not desirous of incurring) a continuation of the work will be the result. If not, he will abandon the field to others, with a hope that their labours may be attended with more success than his own.

The present volume is published when the first quarter of the year has nearly passed away: the cause has been the numerous Financial changes which have taken place, and a desire to insert no superfluous or useless matter. The Internal Revenue, the Customs, and the Port and Postage Tariffs have undergone modification; Judicial changes have taken place, all of which it was essential to insert.

Although not so voluminous a work as its predecessor, -by the additions to various parts of this issue, it is trusted that an approach to accuracy is being made; that, Mauritius will in a few years have an annual which may be able to compete with those of the Cape and other Colonies.

The readiness to aid and the attention which the compiler has received from every branch of the administration in the advancement of his work, is by him sincerely acknowledged.

28th March 1852.

CIRCUMFERENCE OF MAURITIUS

According to Colonel Lloyd's experiments.

It is very difficult, on account of the numerous bays, inlets and promontories, to estimate with precision the extent of circumference of this Island; the following distances may be,however, considered as approaching exactitude as nearly as possible :

From the signal of Butte aux Sables to that of post

Lafayette

From the last to the Dutch Well

Toises Feet.

Circumference of the Island: 90,661 2

This circumference is equivalent to 45 Paris leagues, or 35/, marine leagues.

Supposing therefore that the inlets are compensated by the tongues of land, the superficie of the Island is about 480 millions 744,002 square toises or 433,680 arpents (200 Fr. feet square) of 100 perches of 20 feet.
