This publication provides a detailed discussion of key sustainable development themes. It presents the outcome of a work programme approved by the Commission on Sustainable Development on indicators of sustainable development for use in decision-making processes at the national level. It also presents a proposed framework and a core set of indicators that will be useful to countries who wish to establish their own national programmes for using indicators to measure progress towards sustainable development. The purpose of the report is to stimulate and support further work, testing and development of indicators.
