RULES and ARTICLES

For the better Government of Our Horfe and Foot Guards, and all other Our Forces in Our Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland, Dominions beyond the Seas, and Foreign Parts.

A

SECTION I.
Divine Worfbip.

ARTICLE I

LL Officers and Soldiers, not having juft Impediment, fhall diligently frequent Divine Service and Sermon, in the Places appointed for the affembling of the Regiment, Troop, or Company, to which they belong. Such as wilfully absent themselves, or, being prefent, behave indecently or irreverently, fhall, if Commiffioned Officers, be brought before a Court-martial, there to be publickly and feverely reprimanded by the Prefident; if Non-commiffioned Officers, or private Soldiers, every Perfon fo offending fhall, for his First Offence, forfeit Twelve Pence, to be deducted out of his next Pay; A 2 for

for the Second Offence, he fhall not only forfeit Twelve Pence, but be laid in Irons for Twelve Hours; and, for every like Offence, fhall fuffer and pay in like Manner: Which Money, fo forfeited, shall be applied to the Ufe of the fick Soldiers of the Troop or Company, to which the Offender belongs.

ARTICLE II.

Whatsoever Officer or Soldier fhall ufe any unlawful Oath or Execration, shall incur the Penalty expreffed in the First Article.

ARTICLE III.

Whatsoever Officer or Soldier fhall prefume to speak against any known Article of the Chriftian Faith, fhall be delivered over to the Civil Magiftrate, to be proceeded against according to Law.

Whatsoever Officer or Soldier fhall profane any Place dedicated to Divine Worship, or fhall offer Violence to a Chaplain of the Army, or to any other Minifter of God's Word; he fhall be liable to fuch Penalty, or corporal Punishment, as fhall be inflicted on him by a Court-martial.

ARTICLE V.

No Chaplain, who is commiffioned to a Regiment, Company, Troop, or Garrifon, fhall abfent himself from the faid Regiment, Company, Troop, or Garrifon (excepting in cafe of Sickness, or Leave of Abfence) upon Pain of being brought to a Court-martial, and punished as their Judgement, and the Circumstances of his Offence, may require.

ARTICLE VI.

Whatever Chaplain to a Regiment, Troop, or Garrison, shall be guilty of Drunkenness, or of other fcandalous or vicious Behaviour, derogating from the Sacred Character with which he is invefted, fhall, upon due Proofs before a Court-martial, be dif charged from his faid Office.

HATSOEVER Officer or Soldier fhall prefume to use

traiterous or difrefpectful Words against the Sacred Perfon of His Majesty, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, or any of the Royal Family; if a Commiffioned Officer, he shall be cafhiered; if a Non-commiffioned Officer, or Soldier, he fhall fuffer fuch Punishment as fhall be inflicted upon him by the Sentence of a Court-martial.

Any Officer or Soldier who fhall behave himfelf with Contempt or Difrespect towards the General, or other Commander in Chief of Our Forces, or fhall fpeak Words tending to his Hurt or Difhonour, fhall be punished, according to the Nature of his Offence, by the Judgement of a Court-martial.

Any Officer or Soldier, who fhall excite, caufe, or join in, any Mutiny or Sedition in the Troop, Company, or Regiment, to which he belongs, or in any other Troop or Company in Our Service, or on any Party, Poft, Detachment, or Guard, on any Pretence whatsoever, fhall fuffer Death, upon Conviction before a Courtmartial.

ARTICLE IV.

Any Officer, Non-commiffioned Officer, or Soldier, who, being present at any Mutiny or Sedition, does not use his utmost Endeavours to fupprefs the fame, or who, hearing Words tending to Mutiny and Sedition, does not, without Delay, give Information thereof to his Commanding Officer, ought to be reputed acceffary to the Mutiny, and to be punished by a Court-martial with Death, or otherwise, according to the Nature of the Offence.

Any Officer or Soldier, who fhall ftrike his fuperior Officer, or draw, or offer to draw, or fhall lift up any Weapon, or offer any Uiolence, against him, being in the Execution of bis Dffice, on any Pretence whatsoever, or fhall disobey any lawful Orders. Command
