Preface

The Coast Pilot Manual is issued primarily as a guide to Coast and Geodetic Survey personnel in making field observations and preparing reports from the field to update U.S. Coast Pilots, but is also a guide to the office work in the Coast Pilot Branch in Rockville. It is intended for the use of Coast Pilot Branch personnel, hydrographic survey vessels, hydrographic field parties, photogrammetric field parties, and others assigned to Coast Pilot field inspections.

The original Coast Pilot instructions were published in the Hydrographic Manual, Special Publication No. 143, Revised (1942) Edition, and earlier hydrographic manuals. In 1944, the Coast Pilot section of the 1942 Hydrographic Manual was reprinted as a separate publication. The first (1960) edition and the second (1964) edition were edited by Mr. John A. McCormick, Chief, Coast Pilot Branch.

This third (1969) edition has been edited by Lt. Bobby D. Edwards, USESSA, and reviewed by marine information specialists in the Coast Pilot Branch. The text has been expanded to acquaint field personnel with Coast Pilot requirements to enable them to submit complete and timely reports. Also, an appendix has been added to provide related information of interest to persons using Coast Pilots.

Any suggestions for increasing the usefulness of the manual are solicited. June 1969

Coast Pilot Manual

1. UNITED STATES COAST PILOTS

The Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) Coast Pilots are a series of nautical books that cover a wide variety of information important to navigators of United States coastal and intracoastal waters. Subjects include navigation regulations, outstanding landmarks, channel and anchorage peculiarities, dangers, weather, ice, freshets, routes, pilotage, and port facilities. In 1969, the Survey is maintaining eight Coast Pilots: five for the Atlantic Coast and three for the Pacific Coast. A new edition of each Coast Pilot is published at intervals ranging from 5 to 10 years. The date shown on the title page of new editions of Coast Pilots is the date of the latest Notice to Mariners used in correcting the text. See 2. SUPPLEMENTS.

1.1 History.-In 1796 the first edition of the "American Coast Pilot" was published by Edmund March Blunt (1770-1862) of Newburyport, Mass. "Blunt's Coast Pilot", as the book was more commonly known, was in its 21st edition in 1867 when the Blunt copyrights were sold to the U.S. Coast Survey. See Harold L. Burstyn's 1957 book, "At the Sign of the Quadrant", for an interesting account of the Blunt activities.

The earliest Coast Pilot published by the Coast. Survey was Assistant George Davidson's "Directory for the Pacific Coast of the United States", which was an appendix in the 1858 Coast Survey report. See Oscar Lewis' 1954 book, "George Davidson, Pioneer West Coast Scientist."
