These are times of great challenge for our Nation. Our wealth and unexcelled standard of living have given us opportunity both to enrich our own lives and to turn our attention to the problems of our less fortunate citizens. Taking a vigorous role in making our country a better place for all is the Federal Government, with its many agencies at work in the fields of education, manpower training, mass transportation, rural and urban development, health, and welfare.

Among these agencies, the U. S. Department of Commerce has as its primary concern the Nation's economic health-its prosperity as well as its problems. The Department's tasks range from census-taking and promoting domestic and foreign commerce to spreading the fruits of scientific and technological research to industry and reseeding bare spots among our lagging communities through economic development.

At no time in history has Government been more socially aware, nor have there been more opportunities for public service for young people-especially college graduates who wish to serve society in a meaningful way. A recent study revealed that almost 10 percent of the Commerce team have advanced degrees. College graduates have an unparalleled opportunity to work at jobs that offer serious responsibilities, the promise of growth and the satisfaction of participating in public problem-solving.

This brochure has been prepared for those who wish to explore opportunities at the Commerce Department, which engages almost 1,000 college-trained people annually. The jobs it has to offer are many. There is a place for economists and statisticians, scientists and engineers, sociologists and administrators, oceanographers and meteorologists, and many others.

Many countries envy our system of government which welcomes the participation of all its citizens for periods of service as long as a lifetime or as short as one or two years. Apart from the personal satisfactions, government service broadens perspectives and enhances qualifications for future work. Graduates wishing to go on to careers elsewhere will find themselves better equipped for new tasks after a tour of government duty.

The Federal Government is an equal opportunity employer. It encourages professional advancement and promotion through on-the-job and out-service training programs. It recognizes demonstration of ability and proof of merit. It offers job security and regular salary increases.

Most of all, the Federal service provides opportunity to help shape the large and small decisions that affect us all and contribute toward making this a Nation in which every American can take pride.

AB Frowaridge

Secretary of Commerce
