The Inventory of Federal Archives in the Stutos is one of the products of tho work of the Survey of Federal Archivos, which operatod as a nation-wide project of the Works Progress Administration from January 1, 1936 to June 30, 1937, and has boon continued since that date us a unit of the Historical Records Survey, operating as a state-wide project of the Work Projects Administration, and a local projects of that Administration.

The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows: Series 1, consists of reports on the administration of the Survoy, acknowledgements, and general discussions of the location, condition, and content of Federal Archives in the states, succoeding sorios contuin the detailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form; a separate series number being assigned to each of the executive departments (except the Department of State) and other major units of the Federal Government. Within ouch series No. 1 is a general introduction to the field organization and records of the Government agency concerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory proper, separato numbers being assigned to such stato in alphabetical order. Thus, in oach sories, the inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that for Arizona No. 3, that for Arkansas No. 4, otc. Thus, Indiana is No, 13.

For ouch local office information regarding cuch serios, or unit of rolated records, is presented in the following order: Title, inclusivo datos ("to dato" indicating an open file at the time the infomation Was secured), general description of informational content, description of the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement of frequency and purpose of use, form of the record itself (bound volumes, shoots in folders, etc.), linear footage, description of the containers, physical condition of the records (not stuted if satisfactory), location by room number or other identifying information, and finally the number of the Form 58SA on which this information was originally recorded by a Survey worker und from which it was abstracted for the Inventory. This form is in file in Tho Nutional Archives. When it contains substantial information on addonda shoots which has not boun included in the incographod abstract, indication of this is given by use of the reference "See addonda.",

In Indiana the work of the Survey was under the direction of Professor William O. Lynch, with Mr. Harley Nichols us his assistent from its inception until July 15, 1936, at which time Mr. Nichols succeeded him as director. Mr. A. W. Fishback was in charge of the project from July 1937 to December 1938 and from February 11, 1939 to September 12, 1939, Mr. Samuel J. Kagan, State Director of the Historical Records Survey, supervised the work of the project. Mr. Canis E. Brockway, Acting Stato Supervisor of the Historical Records Survey, had charg of the project from September 12, 1939 to January 18, 1940. Mr. Roger A. Hurst, Stato Supervisor of the Historical Records Survey, has had supervision of the project since January 18, 1940. This Inventory

of the records of Miscellaneous Agoncios in Indiana was prepared in the Indianapolis office of the Survey under the direction of William A. Spurgeon and was edited before mimeographing by Miss Elizabeth Edwards of the Washington office. It is reproduced in mimeographed form through the facilities of the Historical Records Survey.
