TABLE 3.-OASDI benefits in current-payment status at end of period

[blocks in formation]

1 The "total monthly benefit amount" is the total of the monthly benefit rate for each beneficiary. It differs from the "benefit payments" shown in the tables on the old-age and survivors and disability trust funds primarily because "benefit payments" include: (a) some retroactive benefit payments for prior months, and (b) lump-sum death payments.

1 Includes adjustments for (a) refunds of contributions beginning in 1952, and (b)
transfers during calendar years 1947-51 from general funds equivalent to additional
payments arising from the extension of survivors insurance protection to certain veterans
of World War II (Social Security Act Amendments of 1946).

2 Includes interest on amounts held in the railroad retirement account to the credit of
the fund.

Beginning in July 1956, administrative expenses incurred by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare under the disability insurance program are initially

charged to this fund. After the end of each fiscal year reimbursement is made, with
administrative expenses and loss of interest both taken into account. Reimbursement
was first made in June 1958 for the fiscal year 1957.

4 The 1st payment from the OASI trust fund to the railroad retirement account, under
the provisions of the financial interchange provision of the Railroad Retirement Act as
amended in 1951, occurred in July 1958.

Assets of the fund exclude amounts determined under the financial interchange
provision of the Railroad Retirement Act, as amended in 1951, and held in the railroad
retirement account to the credit of the fund.
