48th mile. By selecting the best channel, very fair navigation is obtained. Depth, 2.5 to 7 feet. At 3,261 feet on the right is the pump-house of the Danville waterworks. The mile ends 1,011 feet above Wilson's lower ferry.

49th mile. The same kind of navigation continues. Just above Wilson's ferry the channel is close to the left bank and through a dam with sluice 9 feet wide. sluice, 3.2 feet.

Depth in Wilson's lower ferry.—To Wilson's ferry from Madison is 48.191 miles. Fall, 136.37 feet. Below the ferry the channel is along the left bank to 3,927 feet; depth, 3 to 7 feet. At this point the channel bears to the right and follows a tortuous course between the high points of rock to the dam. The depth above the dam is 2 to 4 feet. To the head of the canal is 49.13 miles, and the fall from Madison is 139.40 feet.

Dam at Danville.-The dam is built of logs and plank, resting on the ledge, and formerly extended nearly the full width of the river; the end toward the left bank has been washed away.

Canal at Danville.-The old canal, at the head, is 45 feet wide; the guard-lock 15 feet wide. From the guard-lock to the foot of the canal the width ranges from 20 to 30 feet, and the water is 1.5 to 6 feet deep. From the head to the foot below Bridge street, Danville, at the flour-mill, is 3,600 feet and the fall is 1.53 feet. From the foot of the canal to the Dan River, at the Richmond and Danville Railroad Bridge, is 1,640 feet, and the fall is 16.03 feet, making the fall from head of the canal to the railroad bridge 17.56 feet. Distance from Madison bridge to Richmond and Danville Raiiroad Bridge, 50.1 miles; fall, 156.96 feet.
