7....Take ye heed, watch and pray for ye know not when the time is; left coming fuddenly, he find you fleeping. And what I fay unto you, I fay unto all, watch. Bleffed is that fervant whom his Lord, when he cometh, fhall find watching.

8....God fo loved the world, that he gave his only begotten fon, that whofoever believeth in him fhould not perish but have everlasting life. For God fent not his fon into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be faved. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believ eth not is condemned already; because he hath not be lieved in the name of the only begotten fon of God.

g....And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, becaufe their deeds were evil. For every one who doeth evil, bateth the light, neither cometh to the light, left hisdeeds fhould be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifeft that they are wrought in God. The dead fhall hear the voice of the fon of God, and shall come forth; they who have done good unto the refurection of life, and they who have done evil unto the refurection of damnation.

10.....A certain fcribe came, and faid unto Jefus, Mafter, I will follow thee whither foever thou goeft. And Jefus faid unto him, the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nefts; but the fon of man hath not where to lay his head. And when Jefus was entered into a fhip, his difciples followed him and, behold, there arofe a great tempeft, infomuch that the fhip was covered with the waves: but he was afleep.

11....And his difciples came to him, and awoke. him, faying, Lord, fave us: we perish. And he

faith unto them, Why are ye fearful, Oye of little faith? Then he arofe, and rebuked the winds and the lea; and there was a great calm. But the men mårvelled, faying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the fea obey him!

12....Now as Jefus fat at meat in a houfe, behold, many publicans and finners came and fat down with him and his difciples. And when the Pharifees faw it, they faid unto his difciples, Why eateth your master with publicans and finners ? But when Jefus heard that, he faid unto them, They that be whole need not 'a physician, but they who are fick: I came not to call the righteous, but finners, to repentance.

13... Jefus fpake this parable unto certain who truft. ed in themfelves that they were righteous, and despised others; two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharifee, and the other a publican. The phariTee flood and prayed thus with himfelt; God I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjuft, adulterers, or even as this publican. I faft twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I poffefs.

14....And the publican ftanding afar off, would not life up fo much as his eyes unto heaven, but fmote upon his breast, and said, God be merciful to me a fin. ner. I tell you that this man went down to his house juflified rather than the other for every one who exalteth himfelf shall be abafed; and he that humbleth himfelt fhall be exalted.

15.... Now when John had heard in prifon the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and faid unto him, Art thon he that should come, or do we look for another? Jefus anfwered and faid unto them, Go, and thew John thefe things which ye do hear and fee: The blind receive their fight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleanfed, and the deal hear; the dead are raif

ed up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them :* and bleffed is he, whofoever fhall not be offended in

me.

16....And Jefus began to fay unto the multitudes, Whereunto fhall I liken this generation? It is like unto children fitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, and faying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced: we nave mourned unto you, and ye

* This phrafe, "The poor have the gospel preach ed to them," is peculiarly fignificant. The moral inAruction which ancient philofophy undertook to fupply, being fhut up in fchools and academies, was confined to the rich and learned. Poor people, and, indeed the general mass of mankind, were very little benefitted by it.

But Jefus the divine teacher came into the world, as the friend of the friendlefs. His own birth and life were in the dreary fhades of poverty; all his companions he chofe from the claffes of the poor and the middling fort: and his gofpel brought relief to the wretched and defpifed, by bringing life and immortality to light, and giving affurance that the very poorest people, in point of acceptance with God, are on equal ground with the richest.

Jefus was probably the first moral and religious teacher in the world (his immediate forerunner John the Baptift excepted) who inceffantly travelled from place to place, gathering together and inftructing the common people and the poor; and adapting his inAtructions even to the fimpleft minds.

And it is worthy of remark, that all the benevolent inftitutions which are known to be in the world, for the relief of the poor, have originated fince the Chriftian ara, and are confined principally to Chriftian

countries.

have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they fay, He hath a devil. The fon of man came eating and drinking, and they fay, Behold a man gluttonous, and a wine-bibber, a friend of pub licans and finners: but wifdom is justified of her children.

17....Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein moft of his mighty works were done, because they repented not. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! Woe unto thee, Bethfaida! for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in fackcloth and afhes. But I fay unto you, it fhall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.

18.... Jefus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became fhining, exceeding white as fnow; fo as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias and Mofes; and they were talking with Jefus,

19....And Peter faid to Jefus, Mafter, it is good for

us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Mofes, and one for Elias. For he knew not what to say; for they were fore afraid. And there was a cloud that overfhadowed them; and à voice came out of the cloud, faying, This is my be loved fon; hear him.

20....And fuddenly, when they had looked about, they law no man any more, fave Jefus only with themfelves. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they fhould tell no man what things they had feen, till the fon of man were rifen from the dead. And they kept that faying with them. X

felves, queftioning one with another what the ring from the dead fhould mean.

21.... The difciples came unto Jefus, faying, Who is the greateft in the kingdom of heaven? And Jefus called a little child unto him, and fet him in the midft of them, and said, Verily, I fay unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whofoever, therefore, fhall humble himself as this little child, the fame is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And wholo fhall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

22....But whofo shall offend one of thefe little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a mill. ftone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the fea. Take heed that yẽ delpife not one of thele little ones; for I fay unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. For the fon of man is

come to fave that which is loft.

23....How think ye? If a man have an hundred fheep, and one of them be gone aftray, doth be not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the moun tains, and feeketh that which is gone aftray? And if fo be that he find it, verily I fay unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not affray. Even fo, it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of thefe little ones fhould perish.

24....Peter came to Jefus, and faid, Lord, how oft fhall my brother fin against me, and I forgive him ? till leven times? Jefus faith unto him, I fay not unto thee, till feven times; but until feventy times feven. My heavenly Father (will exact your debts of you, and not forgive it ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trefpaffes.
