Specifically, "The Committee is concerned over the growing shortages of allied health care providers. shortages of occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, audiologists, and medical laboratory technologists are severe. According to the bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for the number of these allied health disciplines will grow by over 50 percent by the end of the 1990's. As part of its rural health initiative, the Committee places a high priority on projects designed to improve the recruitment of individuals from rural and underserved areas into the allied health professions. (p. 67) initiatives (including, for example nursing and psychology), recruiting Asian Americans into the nursing profession, and international health care. The Committee feels that each of these areas has tremendous potential . for constructive development. The Committee further directs HRSA to set aside funds to be targeted toward the development of nursing expertise in the area of pediatric-emergency medical care.
