SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA.

SIXTEENTH SESSION.

FIRST DAY.

CARSON CITY (Monday), January 16, 1893.

The Senate was called to order at 12 o'clock, noon, by Lieutenant Governor Poujade, who addressed the Senate as follows:

SENATORS:-Again the flight of time brings us together in the employment for which we have been chosen by the people of Nevada. I have full confidence that I shall be able, with the aid of the wise, experienced and dignified men who fill the seats in this chamber, to perform the duties of my office according to the Constitution and the laws. I hope and trust that our labors may benefit this State, whose servants we are. Mr. Stearns moved that the President appoint a temporary Secretary. Carried.

The chair appointed P. S. Corbett.

George Holesworth was appointed temporary Sergeant-at-Arms.

The roll of the holdover Senators was then called, and the following gentlemen answered to their names:

Messrs. Forbes, Folsom, Kaiser, McDonell, Rickey, Stearns, Williams and Williamson.

At the request of the President, the newly elected Senators presented their credentials.

Mr. Foley moved that a committee of two be appointed to invite one of the Justices of the Supreme Court to administer the official oath to the Senators.

Carried.

The President appointed us such committee Messrs. Foley and Williamson, who retired, and in a brief time reported, introducing Chief Jus

tice Murphy, who duly administered the oath to the newly elected Senators, viz.:

Messrs. Boyle, Comins, Gignoux, LaGrave, Maute and Patchen.

The President directed the Secretary to call the roll of all Senators. Roll called and the following Senators answered to their names: Messrs. Boyle, Comins, Forbes, Folsom, Foley, Gignoux, Kaiser, LaGrave, Maute, McDonell, Patchen, Rickey, Stearns, Williams and Williamson.

Mr. LaGrave nominated Mr. Williamson for President pro tem. of the Senate.

Seconded by Mr. Gignoux.

Carried by acclamation.

Mr. LaGrave placed in nomination the following for permanent officers:

Secretary of the Senate, P. S. Corbett of Storey; Sergeant-at-Arms, George E. Holesworth of Washoe; Assistant Secretary, L. P. Davis of Eureka; Minute Clerk, R. Lothrop of Lyon; Journal Clerk, John M. Kelly of Storey; Engrossing and Enrolling Clerk, A. J. Maestretti of Lander; Copying Clerk, Mrs. W. U. Mackey of Ormsby; Messenger, W. H. Stone of Ormsby; Page, Richard Savage of Ormsby.

Seconded by Mr. Stearns.

Carried.

Mr. Foley moved that a committee of two be appointed to invite a Justice of the Supreme Court to administer the oath of office to the officers and attaches.

The President appointed Senators Foley and Williamson as such committee, who returned in a short time and escorted Chief Justice Murphy, who administered the oath, and the officers and attaches entered upon their respective duties.

Mr. Maute moved that three Senators be appointed to inform the Governor that the Senate is duly organized and ready to receive communications from the Governor.

The President appointed Senators Maute, Boyle and Rickey.

Mr. Foley moved that a committee of three be appointed to wait on the Assembly and inform them that the Senate is organized and ready for business.

The President appointed Messrs. Foley, Williams and LaGrave.

ASSEMBLY CHAMBER,
CARSON CITY, January 16, 1893.

I am instructed to inform your honorable body that the Assembly is fully organized and ready to proceed to business, having elected the following officers: Speaker, T. J. Bell of Nye; Speaker pro tem., W. H. A. Pike of Washoe; Chief Clerk, P. M. Bowler, Jr., of Esmeralda ; Assistant Clerk, A. C. Pratt of Douglas; Sergeant-at-Arms, H. P. Flannery of Storey; Journal Clerk, Miss Ida Biroth of White Pine; Minute Clerk, W. H. Minor of Humboldt; Engrossing and Enrolling Clerk, J.
