NOTICE OF QUARANTINE NO. 3 (FOREIGN).

POTATO WART.

The fact has been determined by the Acting Secretary of Agriculture that a plant disease known as potato wart, potato canker, black scab, etc., Chrysophlyctis endobiotica, Schilb. (Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilb.) Perc.), new to and not heretofore widely prevalent or distributed within and throughout the United States, exists in the following countries, viz, Newfoundland; the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon; Great Britain, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland; Germany; and Austria-Hungary.

Now, therefore, I, Willet M. Hays, Acting Secretary of Agriculture, under authority conferred by section 7 of the act approved August 20, 1912, known as "The plant quarantine act," do hereby declare that it is necessary, in order to prevent the introduction into the United States of the disease known as potato wart, potato canker, black scab, etc., to forbid the importation into the United States from the herein before-named countries of the following species, viz, the common or Irish potato, Solanum tuberosum.

Hereafter, and until further notice, by virtue of said section 7 of the act of Congress approved August 20, 1912, the importation for all purposes of the species and its horticultural varieties is prohib
