OPENING STATEMENT OF HON. GAYLORD NELSON, A U.S. SENATOR FROM THE STATE OF WISCONSIN, AND CHAIRMAN, SENATE SMALL BUSINESS COMMITTEE The CHAIRMAN. The Select Committee on Small Business will come to order. The Senate Small Business Committee today opens a series of hearings on the role of small business in energy research and development. We expect this study to continue for several months. Future hearing dates will be announced. The sessions today and tomorrow will be primarily concerned with solar energy and small business. Solar power has breathtaking potentials for the country at large and for the American small business community. Sunlight is our most abundant energy resource. If we were now able to collect and convert to human use just one-half of 1 percent of all the energy that reaches the surface of the continental United States from the sun in a year, we would have 3%1⁄2 times our total national energy consumption of 1974, from all sources. We would have well over 100 percent of the high-side estimates of total national energy consumption in the year 2000. Abundance is only one of the advantages of solar energy. |
