wills there should be a Free Methodist mission in Shinan-Fu, Hupeh province, where the young men are, this fifteen hundred dollars would remain for that purpose. But as His plan unfolded, and I saw that the railroad had reached Cheng Chow, bringing such a rise in property, it looked as if it could not be done; but with God there are no impossibilities. He knew all about the progress that would be made, all about the costs, 'He faileth not.' One of the greatest joys of my life is my utter helplessness -to see God's workings, His care, His strength made perfect in my weakness; and when He commands one to do something for Him, the more difficult the undertaking, the more will His own workings be manifest. He needs us, our weakness and all, to show in us His power, that He may be better known throughout the whole earth. May He bless and use you, and all the Woman's Foreign Missionary Societies, individually and collectively, this year more than ever before. May I give you my favorite quotation from Shakespeare?

"Heaven does with us as we with torches do,

Not light them for themselves.'

"And one from Browning, which please pass on to the Woman's Foreign Missionary societies as my message:

"Christ's maxim is-one soul outweighs the world.'”

Except for these two letters, what happened during that eventful month of June she has not told Her work in repairing the buildings and in getting the compound in such condition that it might be more suitable for a residence, together

with her religious labors, filled the time and taxed her strength to the limit, so that she had neither left for writing. The two lady missionaries-Miss Graves and Miss Meyers-who were with her during the time of her brief stay in Cheng Chow have been requested to supply that which is lacking in this account, and to give in their own language the events of that testing time. These accounts will constitute the next chapter. Miss Leffingwell labored faithfully and heroically over the Sunday, July 2nd, speaking nearly all day to the people who came to hear her; and this day's preaching closed her active work for her Master among the Chinese. She was taken violently ill on the 4th of July, and died on Sunday, the 16th.

Her death, at the time, seemed to all who knew her and the conditions surrounding her, beyond the scope of human knowledge or reason. Why should she be taken at this critical time? How could she be spared just now? Many reasons could easily be given why it would seem next to impossible to spare her at this time. Nevertheless, "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform;" and though all who were interested were deeply grieved and very much confused, yet now, after reflection and a careful survey of the situation, the eye of faith can see that she had accomplished the work God had given her to do: and, like Samson, she has accomplished more by her death than by her life.

Hark! they whisper; angels say,
Sister Spirit, come away,

What is this absorbs me quite,
Steals my senses, shuts my sight,
Drowns my spirits, draws my breath?
Tell me, my soul, can this be death?

-Pope.

FROM CHINA'S SHORES.

BY CLARA A. LEFFINGWELL.

From China's shores the trump of God resounding Shall rouse my sleeping dust, when ages roll; From China's shores, the welcome thought recurring, Has burned itself into my very soul.

Gathered with those, who now in heathen darkness
Ancestral worship follow day by day,

To meet my Lord, while glad hosannas ringing
Proclaim that death and sin are cast away.

To China's shores there let my swift feet hasten,
To bear glad tidings to that blinded throng;
For death with sickles ever busy reaping

E'en those who have not learned redemption's song;

Who never heard that Jesus Christ our Savior
Bought salvation for them full and free.
Truly great the harvest, but the laborers few,
Lord of the harvest, send them; yes, send me!

From China's shores the cry for help is sounding!
Shall friends or love of home restrain our feet?
The Master's calling long and calling loudly,

And where He bids us labor, toil is sweet.

He putteth forth His own, yet goes before them
And leads them, gently opening up the way,
Saying: 'Ask and I will give to thee the heathen,
And I, the Lord, with thee will be alway.'

CHAPTER XXXV.

SICKNESS AND DEATH-ACCOUNTS BY MISS GRAVES AND MRS. SCOFIELD.

"She shines in the light of God,

His likeness stamps her brow;

Through the valley of death her feet have trod,

And she reigns in glory now.

"No breaking heart is there,

No keen and thrilling pain;

No wasted cheek where the frequent tear

Hath rolled and left its stain.

"Shall we mourn when another star

Shines out from the glittering sky?
Shall we weep when the raging voice of war
And the storm of conflict die?

"Oh, why should tears roll down

And our hearts be sorely riven?

There's another gem in the Savior's crown,
Another star in heaven."

BY MISS EDITH GRAVES.

My acquaintance with Sister Clara Leffingwell began in January of 1904. Our meeting on the train seemed quite providential, as I was on my way to Portland, Oregon, to hear her lecture on China.

As we talked over the gracious dealings of God
