[Estimated by Dr. Adolf Soetbeer, the German Statistician.] As to the much-controverted question of the amount of the precious metals mined which is to be deducted from the circulation on the account of use in the arts, the Director of the Mint, after careful and extended inquiries, in 1879, came to the conclusion that the annual consumption of gold and silver, in all forms, in the United States, is not less than $7,000,000 of gold and $5,000,000 of silver. The balance of exchanges in the precious metals, which had been steadily against the United States ever since 1861, has been changed during 1879.
