Richmond's plurality over Fayette McMullin, 291; Pridemore's (dem.) majority over George T. Egbert (rep.) in 1876, 10,336. The total vote in the State in 1878 was 126,814; in 1876, 235,465. The prepayment of the poll-tax was required in 1878 and not in 1876, which accounts in great part for the falling off of the vote. Aggregate vote in 1877, for Governor, 106,329, of which Holliday (dém.) received 101,940. There was no republican nomination, but 4,389 republican votes were cast. At the Legislative election, Nov. 4, 1879, the contest turned wholly upon the debt-funding act passed that year, which provided for payment of the State debt in full (deducting one third for West Virginia) at reduced rates of interest. The parties were so mixed in many counties that no accurate table of the result can be given. The net result is seen in the complexion of the Legislature, which stands: Senate. House. Dem. Debt-payers.. Dem. Readjusters. Republicans. 14 42 The Republicans hold the balance of power, and have thrown it against the debt-payers. |
