I am looking forward to visiting each of our offices, laboratories and field sites and to meeting as many as possible of you individually. Ours is an exciting taskthe monitoring and assessment of pollution levels across the country in air, in water and on the land, the exploration and development of new concepts for identifying, tracing, evaluating and understanding environmental pollution and the development and testing of new concepts for the protection of our environment from the many pollutional insults it now faces as well as the as-yet unrecognized or unknown insults which the future may bring. Our challenge is to meet the short- and mid-range research and monitoring needs of the Agency with a highly mission-oriented program which must and will be closely meshed with the other operating arms of EPA while at the same time we must recognize and meet the longer-range needs which exist, perhaps, only at the horizon of our knowledge. My best wishes to each of you. STANLEY M. GREENFIELD.

SUMMARY STATEMENT ON EPA RESEARCH LABORATORIES

The current intramural laboratory research capability in the Environmental Protection Agency consists of 36 separate research laboratory facilities located in 18 different states. Six of these laboratories are scheduled to be consolidated within the air quality programs at the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and at Ann Arbor in Michigan. After the consolidation EPA will have 30 separate research laboratory facilities.

These facilities range from major research laboratories with up to 184 thousands of square feet of space to research field sites with 3000 square feet of laboratory space. There is a total of 1.18 million square feet of space within these facilities for research and development activities.

These laboratories are staffed by 1,109 research, development, and demonstration professional and 838 non-professional persons. The professional personnel represent about 59 disciplines and specialties including the physical and biological sciences, agricultural sciences, medical and veterinary sciences, economics, social sciences, engineering disciplines, etc.

In addition to the research facilities mentioned above, the EPA has 38 operational and regional laboratories whose missions at times include research type activities. These laboratories have a total of 0.53 million square feet of space and are staffed by 853 positions.

Approximately 1.3 million square feet of additional laboratory space will become available for long-term research when the National Center for Toxicological Research at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, becomes operational. This facility will be jointly occupied and operated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration.

Attached is a Compendium of the research facilities of the Environmental Protection Agency with a brief statement of the laboratory program and information pertaining to the size of the laboratory and the size and composition of the staff of each.
