Res. 297] The Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, to whom was referred the joint resolution (H.J. Res. 297) to change the name of Twin Buttes Dam and Twin Buttes Reservoir on the San Angelo project, Texas, to Bryant Dam and Bryant Reservoir, having considered the same, report favorably thereon without amendment and recommend that the joint resolution do pass. PURPOSE The purpose of House Joint Resolution 297, by Representative Fisher, is to change the name of Twin Buttes Dam and Twin Buttes Reservoir to Bryant Dam and Bryant Reservoir, respectively, in honor of M. D. Bryant. NEED The dam and reservoir are located in the Middle and South Concho Rivers, San Angelo project, Texas. The project is for reclamation purposes. Mr. Bryant was, during his lifetime, a leading exponent in the area of water conservation and an active supporter of the project. His memory is revered by the people in that locality. It would be appropriate to recognize his contributions to the cause of conservation by giving his name to this dam and reservoir. ASPINALL: This is in response to your request for the views of this Department on House Joint Resolution 297, a resolution to change the name of Twin Buttes Dam and Twin Buttes Reservoir on the San Angelo project, Texas to Bryant Dam and Bryant Reservoir. This resolution would change the name of Twin Buttes Dam and Twin Buttes Reservoir on the Middle and South Concho Rivers, San Angelo project, Texas, to Bryant Dam and Bryant Reservoir, in honor of M. D. Bryant. Any law, regulation, document, or record of the United States in which such dam or reservoir is designated or referred to shall be held to refer to such dam or reservoir as "Bryant Dam" and "Bryant Reservoir". The Department has no objection to this resolution. Res. 358] The Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs to whom was referred the joint resolution (H.J. Res. 358) to change the name of San Angelo Reservoir project, Texas, to Culbertson Deal Reservoir project, Texas, having considered the same, report favorably thereon with an amendment and recommend that the joint resolution as amended do pass. The amendment is as follows: Page 1, line 4, strike out "Texas." and insert "Texas, in honor of Mr. Culbertson Deal." PURPOSE The purpose of House Joint Resolution 358, by Representative Fisher, is to change the name of the San Angelo Reservoir project in Texas to the Culbertson Deal Reservoir project. NEED The project is located on the North Concho River, inside the city of San Angelo. It was built by the Army Corps of Engineers, but was largely inspired by Mr. Culbertson Deal, who was for some 20 years head of the board of city development, and an active leader of local conservation efforts. R. 6347] The Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, to whom was referred the bill (H.R. 6347) to amend the act of June 28, 1948, as amended, relating to the acquisition of property for the Independence National Historical Park, having considered the same, report favorably thereon without amendment and recommend that the bill do pass. PURPOSE The purpose of H.R. 6347 is to provide an increase in the funds authorized to be appropriated for Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pa. The new funds, if appropriated, will be used to acquire the last remaining tract of commercial land within the boundaries of the park. H.R. 6347 was introduced by Congressman Byrne of Pennsylvania. A companion bill, H.R. 7981, was introduced by Congressman Eilberg. NEED Creation of Independence National Historical Park was provided for by an act of Congress passed in 1948. Since that time all the property authorized to be acquired within the three city blocks that make up what is known as project A, as well as the property within other units of the park, has been acquired either by the United States or by the State of Pennsylvania, the city of Philadelphia, or private nonprofit organizations, with one exception. The exception is the parcel with which H.R. 6347 is concerned. This parcel is occupied by three buildings-one of them a 16-story office building, the two others |
