Recommend legislation. Of the eight bills recommended by President Johnson, four remain to be acted upon. The Committee will continue to develop new proposals where gaps are found to exist.

Among the activities which the Committee has carried out since its inception just 2 years ago are

1. Organizing or servicing regional consumer conferences in 20 cities. These conferences were attended by more than 15,000 representatives of thte general public, labor, business, educational institutions, women's organizations, and others. The Committee's report to the President resulted in improvement in the Federal Government's overall consumer information program.

2. Appointed and serviced a Panel on Consumer Education for Persons with Limited Incomes which resulted in incorporation of consumer education programs into existing poverty programs and preparation of special materials for use in the consumer education programs for the poor.

3. Worked with the Office of Education in urging the Nation's school systems to include consumer education programs in their curriculums.

4. Worked actively with the business community to stimulate actions of benefit to consumers and appeared at more than 200 industry conventions, meetings, and conferences to discuss consumer problems and press for action on the consumer's behalf.

5. Worked with numerous voluntary organizations which are introducing or expanding their consumer programs. Developed a booklet to serve as a guide to those wishing to start programs and distributed kits of informational material.

6. Worked with State officials in developing new or revitalizing existing consumer programs.

In 1967, the Committee will continue its activities at approximately the same level as in 1966, with mandatory pay and within-grade increases of $13,000 partially offset by a reduction of $5,000 in travel funds, for a net increase of $8,000. Workload statistics
