Kennedy Memorial: By voice votes the House rejected a recommittal motion and passed without amendment H.J. Res. 871, to provide for renaming the National Cultural Center as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and to authorize appropriation therefor. This passage was subsequently vacated and S.J. Res. 136, a similar measure, was taken from the Speaker's table and passed in lieu after being amended to contain the House-passed language.

Rejected amendments that sought to—

Delete provisions for appropriations and borrowing authority;

Provide for creation of a John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial Commission;

Require a balanced budget for the Government prior to erection of a memorial;

Proceed with original legislation except to change the name from National Cultural Center to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts;
