DEAR SIR: In submitting my report as director of Farmers' Institutes for the year 1904 I am very much gratified to be able to state that the interest in the meetings is continually increasing, and that the only serious criticism that is made of the work is the fact that we are unable, with the amount appropriated, to hold as many meetings as are asked for.

The normal institutes, which have been held for some five years, have developed to such an extent, and information in relation to them is requested for from so many different localities, that I have had reported the work of the meeting held at Geneva, November 21, 22, 23, 1904, and the one held at Ithaca, November 25, 26, 1904, not only to put the facts ascertained on record, but to indicate to other States the line of work which we are following out at these normal institutes. The material is thoroughly up to date, and indicative of the agricultural progress of our State.

At the special poultry and bee-keepers' institutes which have been held the respective subjects have received more exhaustive treatment than is possible at a regular farmers' institute, where a portion of the audience is not particularly interested. This class of institutes are becoming very popular and requests for them are numerous.

Over 1,300 applications for institutes were received in 1904. Two hundred and seventy meetings and 1,182 sessions were held, with a total attendance of over 95,000 people. The addresses and subjects have covered practically all branches of agriculture that are practiced in New York State, and have been delivered largely by specialists and experts from among our own people.
