istration of their immediate commands. General visiting is prohibited. (See arts. 436 and 531.)

767. They shall not absent themselves from their rooms unnecessarily during study hours.

768. Midshipmen desiring to visit bulletin boards during study hours shall obtain permission of the midshipman in charge of the floor on which the bulletin board may be situated.

769. They shall have their wash clothes ready for the laundry. by 7 a. m. on Monday, small pieces being in the bottom of the bag. The clothes bag shall not be placed in the corridors before 6 a. m. nor after 7 a. m. on that day. Wash clothes shall be taken into the rooms from corridors before 10 p. m. on the day they are returned from the laundry.

770. Each midshipman, in making out his laundry list, will comply with the following instructions:

(a) Send correct laundry list with laundry.

(b) Mark clothing plainly and properly with owner's name and laundry number.

(c) Send no article of clothing to the laundry with more than one name or laundry number on it.

(d) Clothes bags sent to the laundry will contain the clothing of the owner only.

Manifest errors in preparing laundry lists will be reported. A list of inaccuracies observed on the return of their clothing must be handed in to the executive officer by 9 a. m. on the Monday following.

771. They shall rise, uncover, and stand at attention on the entrance of the duty officer, the assistant duty officer, officer of the day, a company officer, or any midshipman on duty.

772. They shall not be absent from their rooms during the morning inspection by the battalion officers, except on duty; at this inspection one of the occupants of the room shall hold the door open until the departure of the inspecting officer, unless the wedge is available for this purpose.

773. They shall at inspection open the doors of their wardrobes, table drawers, and boxes.

774. They shall at night place the shoes to be blackened by the servants just inside the room door. They are responsible

for the condition of their shoes and must have them properly blackened and the overshoes clean.

775. Upon turning out at reveille midshipmen shall turn back the mattresses, lay the bedclothes neatly across the foot of the bed, and hang nightshirts or pajamas at head of bed.

776. The midshipmen in each room shall rotate in performing the duties "in charge of room." The tour of duty shall be one week, and shall begin at reveille on Sunday. The plate "In charge of room" shall be on the locker of the midshipman performing the duty, or on his bookshelf, so as to be visible from the door of the room. The midshipman coming on duty in charge of room shall be held responsible for changing the plate.

777. In the complete suites, consisting of study rooms, two bedrooms, and a bath, the midshipman in charge of the room shall be responsible for the condition of the bathroom and closet during his tour of duty. Where midshipmen are quartered in one double room, with two small sleeping rooms on the opposite side of the hall, all four of the midshipmen are entitled to use the bath attached to the two smaller rooms. In these cases the midshipmen in charge of the large room shall be responsible for the condition of the bath and closet from the 1st to the 15th of the month, inclusive, and the midshipmen in charge of the two connecting small rooms shall be responsible for the condition of the bath and closet for the remainder of the month.

778. Great care must be taken to prevent the emptying of slops or anything liable to stop the bathroom drains or to cause foul odors.

779. Shower baths shall not be used between a. m. roll call and 4.30 p. m., nor during evening study hours, except on Saturdays and holidays, when they may be used after forenoon inspection. After using the bath, the room shall always be dried and cleaned and habitually kept in that condition.

780. Tub baths may be had during recreation hours; after 9 p. m. they may be had by reporting, going to the midshipman in charge of floor.

781. He (the midshipman in charge of room) shall be responsible for the general cleanliness of the room, and of such

furniture as is used by both occupants in common, and for the observance of regulations in the room.

782. He shall be responsible for the preservation of all public property used in the room by the occupants, and shall see that the regulations about lights are obeyed.

783. He shall sweep out and prepare the room for early morning inspection by call to rooms first period daily. The sweepings from the rooms shall be put into the adjoining passage, from which they shall be removed at once by a servant. On Sunday this time is extended to 9 a. m., after which no sweepings shall be thrown into the corridor.

784. He shall not allow food to be prepared nor an entertainment to be given in his room.

785. When a room has but one occupant, he shall have the duties and responsibilities of midshipman in charge of room. 786. When the midshipman in charge of a room is on the sick list, or is on duty, one of his roommates shall act in his place. 787. In the absence of the midshipman in charge of room, one of the other occupants will be held responsible for infractions of regulations in the room, if present.

788. Midshipmen on duty, and those on the sick list not in sick quarters, shall be held responsible for the condition of their lockers, table drawers, and toilet articles.

789. Trunks, valises, satchels, hand bags, etc., shall not be allowed in the rooms; they must be marked with the owner's name and turned in to the master-at-arms for safe-keeping; access to them will be permitted only by permission of the commandant of midshipmen, the executive officer, or duty officer.

790. Money and valuables shall not be left lying about the

rooms.

791. No one shall enter a midshipman's room during study hours, except on duty, without the permission of the commandant of midshipmen.

792. Midshipmen shall not visit the basement during study hours without permission of the duty officer or, in his absence, the officer of the day, except when going to and from the store and tailor shop. For this purpose they shall use the stairway in the wing nearest the store or place to be visited, as the case may be, and they shall not enter the part of the basement between those stairways at any time, except on duty.

793. Midshipmen are forbidden to sit, lounge, or loiter around the main doors or the entrance steps of Bancroft Hall.

794. No midshipman shall introduce any person into the mess hall or quarters without permission of the commandant of midshipmen, or bring any improper character within the academic limits.

795. The reception room is for the accommodation of the friends of midshipmen. Visitors will not be permitted in the corridors of Bancroft Hall at any time, nor in any midshipman's room, except under the following conditions, all of which must be fulfilled in each case: From after chapel until 12.20 p. m. on Sundays, for members of the midshipman's immediate family only, by special permission of the commandant of midshipmen upon the written application of the midshipman concerned. The building will be cleared of visitors promptly at 12.20 p. m.

796. The reading room is for the benefit of midshipmen of all classes. No one shall remove any paper, periodical, or book from the same, nor introduce any visitor therein. A complete authorized uniform will be worn at all times therein previous to 9.30 p. m.

797. Bancroft Hall, except Memorial Hall and Recreation Hall, shall, weather permitting, be cleared on Wednesdays from 3.40 until 5 p. m., and no midshipman shall return to his quarters during this period except by permission of the duty officer.

798. The use of the yard telephone in the office by midshipmen for other than official purposes is prohibited. The longdistance telephones shall not be used.

799. Each midshipman will report, in writing, to his battalion officer on the 30th of each month of the academic year that he has read the "Articles for the Government of the United States Navy" during the current month. Failure to make this report will be reported by the battalion officer.

XXIII. OFFICIAL INTERCOURSE.

800. Communications to the Navy Department from persons connected with the Academy shall be made through the superintendent.

801. Midshipmen of the first class are warned that the use of any political or other outside influence to obtain particular assignments to duty after leaving the Naval Academy is forbidden by Navy Department order. All requests for duty must be made through official channels by the person concerned.

802. Midshipmen wishing to address the superintendent officially shall first obtain permission of the commandant of midshipmen.

803. Midshipmen wishing official interviews with the superintendent can have them on any day, Sunday excepted, when not engaged in their studies or recitations. All business they may have with him shall be transacted at his office, and not at his quarters.

804. Written communications from midshipmen to the superintendent shall be forwarded through the commandant of midshipmen.

805. Midshipmen having cause of complaint against any person connected with the Academy may make it known in writing to the superintendent through the commandant of midshipmen.

806. Midshipmen having business with the commandant of midshipmen shall apply to the duty officer for permission to visit his office, stating the nature of their business.

807. Canceled.

808. No midshipman shall address an instructor on the subject of marks without permission from the superintendent.

809. No midshipman shall address an officer or midshipman who has reported a delinquency on the subject of such report without permission from the superintendent, and officers and midshipmen shall not converse with offenders on the subject of such reports without permission. This does not apply to officers in the executive department; but midshipmen shall first request such officer's permission before referring to the report.

810. Midshipmen shall not go to the house or office of any officer to make a complaint or request in greater numbers than three at a time, and then only after obtaining written permission from the superintendent through the commandant of midshipmen.

811. All orders coming through a midshipman on duty, a midshipman officer, or a midshipman petty officer are official and must be obeyed accordingly.
