PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Currently, (fiscal year 1971) 38 institutions are receiving some support to conduct training of radiation protection specialists and technicians. A total of more than 2,500 students have received some training in graduate radiation courses supported by training grants. Of these students, 862 received advanced degrees as graduates majoring in radiation and received student support from these grants. Of these, 683 have received master's degrees and 179 have received Ph.D. degrees. In addition, these training grants provided the opportunity for more than 590 other students to receive full graduate training in radiation protection. Technician training programs at 8 institutions are now supported by Radiation Grants. These schools have graduated 456 students fully trained as radiation technicians. Also 1,043 students at these schools have received some training in radiation technology. TYPES OF ASSISTANCE: Project Grants. USES AND USE RESTRICTIONS: Demonstrate new and improved methods of collecting and disposing of solid waste and processing and recovering materials and energy from solid waste. Federal support up to two-thirds of the project (including essential construction costs). Demonstrate resource recovery systems for which the Federal share shall not be more than three-fourths of the project. Construct and demonstrate new and improved solid waste disposal facilities. Federal support shall not be more than one-half in the case of a project serving an area which includes only municipalities and not more than three-fourths in any other case. Allowable costs are determined by Environmental Protection Agency and Solid Waste Management Office policy, as contained in “Terms and Conditions for Demonstration Grants" available upon request. OBJECTIVES: To assist State, interstate, municipal, and intermunicipal agencies and organizations in development of plans and programs leading to the solution of solid waste management problems. TYPES OF ASSISTANCE: Project Grants. USES AND USE RESTRICTIONS: For making surveys of solid waste disposal practices and problems within the jurisdictional areas of eligible agencies; developing and revising solid waste disposal plans as part of regional environmental protection systems for such areas, providing for recycling or recovery of materials from wastes whenever possible and including planning for the reuse of solid waste disposal areas and studies of the effect and relationship of solid waste disposal practices on areas adjacent to waste disposal sites; developing proposals for projects to be carried out pursuant to section 208 of the Resource Recovery Act of 1970; or planning programs for the removal and processing of abandoned motor vehicle hulks. Federal support up to 66-2/3 per centum of the cost for planning programs including only one municipality, and not to exceed 75 per centum of the cost in any other case.
