Appropriations restricted to the above and the operation and maintenance of the school. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicant Eligibility: Male high school graduates who are U.S. citizens. In general, criteria are similar to those generally used for college admission.

Beneficiary Eligibility: Same as applicant eligibility.

Credentials/Documentation: Request to Congressman or Senator for nomination for appointment to the school - usual documents for college admission.

APPLICATION AND AWARD PROCESS:

Preapplication Coordination: Person desiring appointment to the school apply to Senators or Congressman for nomination. Application Procedure: Nominating officials submit nominations to school through Maritime Administration. Selection is competitive by merit.

Award Procedure: Appointment approved by Assistant Secretary for Maritime Affairs (Maritime Administrator).

Deadlines: Nominations must be submitted by December 31 of year preceding that in which admission is desired.

OBJECTIVES: To assist the States in the technical evaluation and the transfer of information in order to develop uniform regulations in the building industry.

TYPES OF ASSISTANCE: Advisory Services and Counseling; Dissemination of Technical Information.

USES AND USE RESTRICTIONS: Provides individual States with current information regarding other State programs, legislation, and services. This is accomplished by consulting with the States directly and by the distributing of material which is sent to the NBS by each state. This distribution is done without editorial comment or legislative direction. NBS, in cooperation with the Council of State Governments, responds to legislative writing assistance inquiries and provides staff assistance to the annual conference of the National Conference of States on Building Codes and Standards.

USES AND USE RESTRICTIONS: Provides the scientific basis for measurements that are used for assurance of interchangeability and uniformity of manufactured items, for process control, for informational and scientific purposes, and for fairness and objectivity in commerce. The principal emphasis is on those calibrations and other tests requiring such accuracy as can be obtained only by direct comparison with NBS standards to the extent that funds are available to NBS. There are no use restrictions.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicant Eligibility: Calibrations are provided on a fee basis to State and local governments, academic institutions, scientific laboratories, industrial firms, corporations, and individuals. The program operates through support for data compilation projects and publication of their output. In addition the Information Services answer requests for technical information and data. There are no specific use restrictions other than that copyright may rest with the U.S. Government.
