ONSET

Sporadic legionellosis continues to exhibit seasonality, with 51% of all reported cases for 1979-1980 having had onset in July-October. Approximately, the same number of cases were reported for 1978 and 1979; the decrease in cases in 1980 is probably due in large part to delayed reporting. Sporadic legionellosis continues to be diagnosed more frequently in men (68% of cases in 1980) and among those in the 50-69-year age range (55% of cases in 1980). The case-fatality ratio for 1980 was 16%. The only recognized outbreaks of legionellosis in 1980 occurred in a San Francisco hotel (February-March, 6 cases) and at the University Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont.

The reported cases of leprosy continue to increase, but this represents an increase in imported cases rather than indigenous transmission.

LEPTOSPIROSIS - Reported cases by 5-year periods, United States, 1955-1980

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small]

Less than 100 cases of leptospirosis are reported annually (1964 and 1978 excepted). Because leptospirosis has few distinctive clinical features, many more cases than those reported probably occur each year.
