The last major epidemic of meningococcal disease in this country occurred in 1943. Agespecific incidence rates for cases reported to CDC in 1980 showed that the peak incidence rate occurred in infants <1 year of age. The apparent higher rates for a few select states may be due to reporting artifacts or to differences in actual incidence rates of disease.
