It is during these ten years that you need New Year's resolutions more than at any other time; for if you become lax in your efforts at self improvement, if you allow yourself to degenerate into idling, loafing, gossiping, etc., your future will not be much. These things are bad enough in themselves, but they also lead to tippling, gambling, etc.; and the course of a dissipating doctor is soon run. While of these forty active years the first ten must be filled with effort and sacrifice, the last ten should be as free No. 1. from strained efforts as you can well make them. This leaves twenty years of prime, active service. In the first ten you should have prepared yourself as thoroly as possible for this service. During this twenty years you must put into practice your best knowledge, and also keep up with the ever advancing procession. Yes, it is time for New Year's resolutions again. Yes, they come every year. Do you get tired of them? You want to rest a year from them, do you? What is a year, any way? Let us see. You entered the profession at about twenty-five. You will leave it, say at sixty-five. That will leave forty years of active practice. The first ten years you were not overburdened with practice, but during these years you determined whether you would be a mediocre practitioner, or a leader in your community. If, during these ten years, you applied yourself assiduously "Tired of New Year's resolutions?" and "What is a year, any way?" did you say? It is one twentieth of the best part of your life. Is that worth anything? Are you willing to admit that it isn't? Yes, one twentieth of your active life! Life is short, isn't it? We must do our mission as time flies along, or we will soon find that our allotted time has gone by and our mission unfulfilled. "Too late" are sad words; as sad as "It might have been." Now can we realize that each coming year is full of possibilities-of duties |
