In

presidential proclamation in July of the same year. divided into four districts in 1867, Wilmington was constituted the port of entry, with a resident Collector for the District of Wilmington. July 1880, it was granted privilege of immediate transportation of merchandise without appraisement. When the customs service was reorganized by the President, as of 1914, it was made headquarters port for District 15 (North Carolina). Owing to the loss and periodic destruction of customs records, files are incomplete. The office was located in a building or Water Street, between Market and Princess, from 1819 to 1840, when the building was destroyed by fire. A brick building, erected in its place in 1848, was occupied until 1916, when the present Custom House was completed. Though an effort has been made to organize this material by subject matter, it is advisable to consult all entries for possible material on any one subject. Entries are listed chronologically under subject headings.

N.B. All records of the port of Gastonia are in custody of this agency, and various records of both active and discontinued ports and stations may be found in the files.
