NEW BERN

OFFICE OF DEPUTY COLLECTOR (Defunct)
(A) Post Office, New and Middle Sts.
(B) City Hall, Pollock and Craven Sts.

This is one of the oldest ports in North Carolina, its known history dating from before the Revolution. Under the Articles of Confederation it was constituted headquarters for the District of Beaufort, with a resident Collector authorized to collect the state duty and the continental impost as soon as it should be authorized and become due. It was constituted the port of entry and delivery for the District of New Bern, February 8, 1790. With other southern ports, it was blockaded by proclamation of the President in April 1861, closed April 11, 1865, and reopened to foreign commerce in July of that year. In 1867 it was constituted a port of entry for the District of Pamlico, and in July 1880 was extended the privilege of immediate transportation of merchandise without appraisement. When the customs service was reorganized by the President, as of 1914, New Bern was constituted a port of entry, under the headquarters port at Wilmington. It was abolished as a port of entry, by executive order, in 1934. Some of the records were carried to Beaufort, some to Wilmington, and some were left in New Bern. Of the latter, part were stored in some confusion in the new post office building in custody of the postmaster, and part were stored, without custody, in the offices of the NYA in the old post office building, which is now the City Hall. Subsequent to the survey the records in custody of the postmaster were transferred to The National Archives in Washington. The following entries are listed chronologically.
