BEAUFORT

OFFICE OF DEPUTY COLLECTOR

Customs Bldg., 130 Ann St.

In

Incorporated as early as 1722 as a seaport entitled to a Collector for Carteret Precinct, Beaufort is one of the oldest ports in the state. 1790 it was constituted a port of delivery in the District of New Bern. In 1803 it was established as the port of entry and delivery, with a resident Collector for the newly created District of Beaufort. With other southern ports, it was blockaded by proclamation of the President in 1861, but the blockade was later relaxed in consequence of actual military occupation by federal troops. The port was opened to foreign commerce in July 1865. In 1867 it was constituted the port of entry for the District of Beaufort, subject to change of the port to Morehead City at the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury. When the customs service was reorganized by the President as of 1914, Beaufort was constituted a port of entry, under the headquarters port at Wilmington.

For an unreported number of years prior to 1910, the agency was located in the North Carolina Railroad Building. It was located in the Potter Building from 1910 to 1925, and in the Gordon Street residence of Mrs. L. P. Hudgins from 1925 to 1930, when it was moved to its present location. N.B. Certain records brought from the customs office in New Bern when that office was discontinued in 1934 are on file in this office, but older records of both Beaufort and New Bern were transferred to Wilmington in 1914.
