the river and the source is an heartrending book that talks about the traditions of the luo community, the book has based mainly on gender superiority where the women in this book are deemed to be greater as they can be able to overcome challenges in life and are able to survive,an example is Akoko who is able to overcome many challenges after his husband who was a chief dies followed by the death of his son who inherited his fathers throne, then the other son is killed in a war.even though their husbands die,the women remain and try to adapt to the challenges
The book also tries to show the modern society,it shows the different lifestyle people live in the modern society as compared to the olden society, becky is used to show the cultural erotion in the modern society
The book also shows some aspects of religion through maria.it gives the difference in religion, culture and modern society.
